CoPA member Paul Matzner's photograph “Wild Hair Day” was chosen for Off the Cuff: The Spontaneous and Unrehearsed, a juried exhibition at the Minneapolis Photo Center.
On display through February 26, Off the Cuff features images by 70 photographers from across the U.S. that demonstrate the complex and varied roles photography employs as a witness and an accomplice in seeing the world. Relating to both the genres of street photography and performance art, these images may collectively portray chance encounters, improvisations, decisive moments in the height of action, and documents of occurrences. Without premeditation, the photographer captures what arises – acting as the mediator between the photograph and events as they unfold .
Matzner's piece “Wild Hair Day” was taken in New York City on the Brooklyn Bridge in 2010. "I was intrigued by the man peering at his map and am not sure I even noticed his hair flying at the time I made the shot. It was a happy circumstance when I looked at the image on my computer later. I also happen to like the gridlike pattern in his suitjacket matching the pattern of lines on his map," says Matzner about his photograph. This image is also featured in his photo book New York City Moments, a collection of street photographs made on three recent trips to NYC that was recently reviewed by Paul Henning on Stock Answers. Matzner will return to New York in spring 2012 to concentrate on people in Bryant Park of Midtown Manhattan.
