Letting Go -  A Meditation on the Tamarack Tree, its Environment, and the Meaning of Loss.

From the exhibit narrative:

"The Tamarack tree finds purchase on shaky ground. It is a transition zone pioneer, a key provocateur in the drama of converting lake into forest. As sediments precipitate out of suspension, over time the lake becomes shallow, giving lily pads and other sunlight-seeking, sky-reaching plants the opportunity to take root. They in turn eventually provide sufficient - if uncertain - foundation for the tentative Tamarack seed."

We are proud to announce that the recipient for the 2012 Coalition of Photographic Arts Artist Incentive Award is CoPA member William Zuback. He will receive a $500 cash award to use to help fund one of his upcoming photography projects.

Numerous CoPA members submitted essays written on one of their photographs. We asked them to comment about its context, value, and how it relates to their artistic vision and purpose. Artists were

asked to also explain in detail a future photography project they are planning to pursue (or currently working on) and how the CoPA Artist Incentive Award will help them to complete it.

William’s submission was about his work “The Suspicious Behavior Series.” From Mr. Zuback:

A group of photographers known as the “Signature Seven” will be displaying their artwork at the Horicon Marsh Education Center Monday July 2nd and continuing until August 31st.

What is a photographic signature style? It is a unique way of looking at and capturing the world with a camera.

The photographers collaborating on this exhibit came together through a photographic art class taught at the Center for Photography at Madison. The goal was to develop an individual “signature style” that could be expressed in a body of work, such as a portfolio, an exhibit, or a book.

That’s what they’ve been doing for the past three years – establishing and refining their own signature styles. This exhibit, and subsequent book, is a testament to how they have come to apply thier individual styles to the subject of Wisconsin.

CoPA member Paul Matzner's photograph “Wild Hair Day” was chosen
for Off the Cuff: The Spontaneous and Unrehearsed, a juried exhibition at the Minneapolis Photo Center.

On display through February 26, Off the Cuff features images by 70 photographers from across the U.S. that demonstrate the complex and varied roles photography employs as a witness and an accomplice in seeing the world. Relating to both the genres of street photography and performance art, these images may collectively portray chance encounters, improvisations, decisive moments in the height of action, and documents of occurrences. Without premeditation, the photographer captures what arises – acting as the mediator between the photograph and events as they unfold

CoPA member Erik Ljung is admittedly shy but having a camera in front of his face is his good excuse to interact with strangers he might otherwise be reluctant to approach. His recently exhibited his work, using his last roll of Kodachrome film.

CoPA member Erik Ljung is admittedly shy but having a camera in front of his face is his good excuse to interact with strangers he might otherwise be reluctant to approach.

“My camera is the perfect excuse to put myself in sticky situations,” the 27-year old photographer said. “I use my camera as a tool. I study photography and photographers all day, every day – it consumes me – but I rarely photograph without a purpose.”

What is the difference, and where do you fit in?

Photographers often ask me how CoPA differs from a camera club. As President of a photographic arts group I feel it’s vital to set the proper expectations for new members as to what they will find in, and get from, CoPA.
