When someone asked Bernard Spinelli a while back why he was passionate about his photography he replied he wasn’t. “I did say that I was passionate about other people’s photography.” Admittedly it's trite to say a photograph is worth a thousand words, but as Bernie says, try describing a fireworks display. Bernard Spinelli is passionate about photography, but not necessarily his own.

When someone asked him a while back why he was passionate about his photography “I replied that I wasn’t,” Bernie said in an email interview. “I did say that I was passionate about other people’s photography.”

Bernie has been photographing since 1963 while working as a field service technician at California’s Vandenberg Air Force Base. “I’ve been exposed to a lot of visual input in my lifetime, which is storytelling in its truest sense and allowing one to be there and experience the moment as it happened.”

Admittedly it's trite to say a photograph is worth a thousand words, but as Bernie says, try describing a fireworks display.

Frank Miller is drawn to an area he calls landscape minimalism – “big fields, long horizons, wide skies, and the occasional grain elevator, windmill or power line magnified by the solitude around it.” Recently, the Shepherd Express'City Guide published one of his theater production images.

Photographs by CoPA members Frank Miller and Coree Coppinger are featured in the Shepherd Express’ recently released 10th annual City Guide.

Frank’s photograph in the 2011 City Guide’s What’s New section is of a scene from the Optimist Theatre’s outdoor production of The Tempest at Alverno College. Coree’s image of children at play at Milwaukee’s Summerfest highlights the festival section of the City Guide.

“My camera is the perfect excuse to put myself in sticky situations,” the 27-year old photographer said. “I use my camera as a tool. I study photography and photographers all day, every day – it consumes me – but I rarely photograph without a purpose.”

Since the close of last year’s annual members' show, CoPA’s leadership knew it had to find a new venue for the sixth annual exhibit because the P. H. Dye Building in the Historic Third Ward that had been the site of the previous five years’ shows would no longer be available.

What is the difference, and where do you fit in?

Photographers often ask me how CoPA differs from a camera club. As President of a photographic arts group I feel it’s vital to set the proper expectations for new members as to what they will find in, and get from, CoPA.
