Bio

My love for photography began early. It started when my mother put that first camera in my hands. I have been enthralled ever since with the power of that little box. I studied Black & White photography through High School and College. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Professional Communications, with a focus in visual communications from Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I have been professionally photographing weddings since 2005. I am a member of Wedding Portrait Photographers International (WPPI), Milwaukee’s Coalition of Photographic Arts (CoPA) group and the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP).

I strive to continually improve, learn, and develop as a photographer. Most recently, during the summer of 2009, I had the opportunity of spending time at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, studying The Power of Light with Tony Corbell; Realizing Your Photographic Vision with Frank Lavelle; and Staying Fresh: Being Successful as a Photographer with Joe Buissink.

Awards: In late 2009, my image, "Embracing the Light" received the Viewers' Choice award at the Coalition of Photographic Arts, Juried Exhibition. In 2010, my image titled, "Dancer" was a finalist in the Digital Pro Photo magazine's Art of Photography contest.

Artist's Statement

Fascinated with photography since I first held a camera in my hands, I was enthralled with the possibilities of photography. The ability to keep a moment of time frozen is extremely powerful to a young girl. As I have grown in my love and craft of photography, I remain amazed by the endless possibilities that photography offers. I am only limited by my perspective that day and my own imagination.

My approach to creating fine art photography is based on a unique rule of thirds; one third of an image is brought to the work by the subject, the second third is added by the photographic artist and the remaining third is from the viewer of the work. This is how I begin my creative process, always, with this thought in mind. The rest of my process, I find is collaboration. Whether it is collaboration with the person I am photographing or with the integrity of the location. The final result is from an original concept that is explored through creative play.

All of my images are a part of me and my experiences thus far. I have discovered that my favorite images, the images that excite me the most are in how I engage the viewer; the final third that the viewer brings. I juxtapose the subject and have one object in total contradiction to the rest.  Sometimes it is obvious and other times subtle. I like to challenge the viewer in how they process a scene. Do they have to double back to check what they saw or linger a while to take in the contradiction, the gotcha?
